Megan CrossSophie ParkinRyan Cheyne, People Director, Rentalcars.com and Booking.com – “Making Manchester Home: Why Booking.com is investing £100m in a new campus for its 1,500 colleagues”
Ryan CheyneRentalcars.comBooking.comRyan Cheyne, People Director at Rentalcars.com – a subsidiary of Booking.com, discussed the introduction of car hire with a “purpose to empower the people.”
Playing an integral role in the 8 million annual bookings over 160 different nations, Ryan knows a thing or two about success in the eCommerce business – aside from the management of over 1,500 members of staff! Ryan puts his people first, with the company’s main approach to be “To empower people to discover and do more.” He ensures their ever-growing team are treated the best.
Booking.com are looking to expand on their current success by undergoing an office move from its current residencies at four spots across the city to new chic offices, located in the Manchester Goods Yard, that simply ooze modernity. The new construction is an extensive 220,000 square foot campus with huge potential for Booking.com and their employees. With their previous offices being dubbed the ‘coolest offices in Manchester’ it is no wonder Booking.com sits comfortably in the top 20 of Glassdoor employers.
When talking about “making Manchester home,” Ryan articulated exceptionally well, speaking with conviction and enthusiasm in regard to the development of Manchester’s tech ecosystem and where Booking.com finds its place within it. The development of the new offices is a nod towards attracting the city’s biggest and brightest talents as the company looks to progress as it has, from strength to strength.

Nick Glynne, Managing Director, Buy It Direct – “Strategies to counter the threat to UK online retailers from Amazon and other marketplaces”
Nick GlynneBuy It DirectExpert strategist with over 18 years of experience in the eCommerce business, Nick Glynne spoke about the issue of online empires such as Amazon and their impact on the business environment. The passion in Nick’s voice was evident, with a vast field of knowledge surrounding the digital sphere it is clear how he took a computer repair shop in 2000 and propelled it into Buy It Direct – accumulating a staggering 80,000% (£240m) rise in company value from the initial £3,000 he paid for it. Not a small feat by any means, but Nick couldn’t build this success on his own and now has 450 employees on his payroll committed to working efficiently whether that is in 300,000 square foot warehouses or state-of-the-art call centres.
Buy It Direct is still turning over profit year on year, which expertly illustrates how Nick is a true professional when it comes to protecting UK online retailers against the threat of eCommerce giants like Jeff Bezos’ Amazon. Commercial strategy and lobbying strategy (PR & Lobbying, etc.) are key factors to help marketplaces like Buy It Direct succeed.
The key, according to Nick, is about retailing not “e-tailing,” targeting consumers who understand retail and dealing with vendors who are not saturated with products. Amazon has “won the war,” Nick says, but this does not mean there isn’t any opportunity to make hay while the sun still shines, specific strategies can lead to profit even in the wake of huge corporations.
