Listen here!Ahead of the first release of The Candidateās Tech & IT podcast, āTechnically Speakingā, we sat down to talk about why itās so important to address issues in the community and what the team are aiming to achieveā¦
Firstly, tell us a bit about yourself.
Iām Jack, Tech & IT Recruitment Manager at The Candidate. Having been in and around the Tech recruitment space since 2015, Iāve witnessed first hand the change in the industry. It has been an amazing journey to watch the community evolve to what it is today. When I first joined as a Tech Recruitment Consultant, I was recruiting for roles far and wide such as Front End Web Developer, Infrastructure Managers, Software Engineers (.Net / Python / Java), but there always felt a disconnect between Tech just another function in a business, to nowadays when Tech is well and truly a key business driver. Tech is at the forefront of investment, forefront of recruitment, forefront of education and so much more.
Jack Such, Technology Recruitment Manager
Yet despite the Tech bubble weāre living in today, Iām still seeing far too many businesses who do not understand what it means to be Tech Firstā¦ Far too many businesses who do not understand how to address culture in Tech, how to recruit successfully into Tech, how to attract & retain technical talent. Donāt get me wrong, there are some amazing examples of organisations across the region who genuinely get it, but there are still those who think that working in Tech means you want to sit in a dark room alone and codeā¦ The types of organisations who want to recruit a Sole Developer to look after everything from their website, to their database, to their technical infrastructure, to their laptops & phones. The types of organisations who donāt feel they need to offer benefits to attract talent, who donāt invest in their culture, who donāt embody a positive organisational mindset. Truthfully, these are the types of businesses who struggle to attract and retain talent but these businesses still leave a lasting impact on the lives, experiences and confidence on candidates throughout their career!
How did the idea for the podcast come about and why is Technically Speaking important?
Technically Speaking was an idea I had which gives a free and safe space to candidates to talk about their experience. Tech as a whole is one of the most inclusive & diverse industries out there, and yet there are still numerous horror stories of bad employee experiences. The lack of understanding is real. Technically Speaking is here to voice the negatives which still exist in our industry, to voice those problems people experience and to help guide the industry in the right direction.
Who will be involved and what will you be talking about?
Iām delighted to confirm we have an amazing range of guests confirmed up for our episodes of Technically Speaking from Software Engineers, Managing Directors, Head of Developments, Project Managers and more. Each episode is designed to address different issues in the industry ranging from racial discrimination, issues attracting tech talent, culture in tech, old-school methodologies and much more. We are not hear to promote businesses in Technically Speaking, we are not here to advertise candidates; we are here to make a real difference and to highlight real areas of change in the industry.
