As we approach the end of 2022 and look ahead to 2023, there are several emerging trends in the world of technology that are worth paying attention to. Two of the most significant trends that are likely to continue gaining momentum in the coming year are the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and the increasing focus on green technology. Data and Tech Director, Leif Radford, sat down with us to discuss where he feels we'll see developments next year.

Leif Radford, Data & Tech Recruitment DirectorBelow are five key trends we’re going to see in the year ahead when it comes to technology – the advancement and prominence of AI, expansion of the Metaverse, the blurring of digital and physical elements, investment into Green Tech, and increasing connectivity.
AI is set to go from strength to strength in 2023, despite the downsizing of AI and Machine Learning departments at some of the tech giants such as Amazon, Meta, and Twitter. Despite economic uncertainty, experts claim that AI will continue to be an area of focus over the year ahead, due to the massive impact it can make on various industries and even our day-to-day lives. Think of its prominence already; automated customer service chat bots, manufacturing robots in factories, and even newer advancements like self-driving cars and delivery drones. In fact, even the creator of Gmail predicts that Google may soon be obsolete as a search engine due to the growth of a new high-powered AI chat bot called ChatGPT that responds to prompts and questions.

These tools create brilliant images based of the prompts you provide – the image below was generated on DALL-E 2 with the prompts ‘An astronaut riding a horse in space in a photorealistic style’. It will be interesting to see the impact of technology and AI on the creative industry in the year ahead, now that so many people have access to these tools. Maybe providing effective prompts to image generation AI tools will become an art in itself – there are already a huge number of YouTube tutorials on the subject!

What started in most people’s minds as a sort of VR chatroom or gaming platform, the Metaverse is set to turn increasingly professional in 2023. The popularity of video meetings and remote working post-covid means that businesses and tech companies are seeing ways to make the experience more realistic and immersive for users. Some companies are even looking to recreate their HQ skyscrapers in the Metaverse to allow staff to experience ‘coming into the office’ and completing HR tasks virtually.
This is also the case for consumer brands, with fashion and lifestyle companies working on immersive experiences for their customers to encourage sales and brand loyalty. There was even a Metaverse Fashion Week earlier this year, and it’s set to return in 2023!
Metaverse Fashion WeekThe line between digital and physical has become increasingly blurred over the past few years, with the widespread emergence and increasing accessibility of tools like 3D printing and digital twins. This technology allows real-life processes to be modelled virtually, and vice versa. With 3D printing, you can design an object online and the printer will make it a reality – even things like guns and food, which raises a whole host of ethical dilemmas. Digital Twins could be considered, in lemans terms, the opposite of this: creating a digital version of a real-life object digital to glean insights and discover improvements. A good example of this is in Formula One, they create Digital Twins of their cars and run scenarios to suggest improvements, and then they 3D print the optimised parts! We’re likely to see a lot more of this in the future as businesses strive to optimise their processes.

2023 is set to see huge investment into environmentally conscious technology. Energy giants such as Shell are looking into how technology can help them produce greener energy in the future, and an increasing number of start-up businesses are utilising tech to overcome the climate crisis – such as removing the need for fossil-derived plastic due to 3D printed algae bio-plastic. There’s even the creation of green hydrogen that produces no greenhouse gas emissions. Overall, we’re likely to see an increasing focus on green tech over the next few years.

Finally, it looks like we’ll continue to be more connected than ever in 2023. With the roll-out of 5G, this not only speeds up our own personal internet usage, but also impacts areas such as surveillance, automation, and virtual reality. This also leads into the Internet of Things (IoT), which shows no signs of slowing down, as everything from our fridges, central heating systems, and watches get connected. This will allow businesses to gather increasingly accurate data, meaning areas such as customer service, product maintenance, and even medical care can become increasingly accurate and streamlined.

In conclusion, while there are many other emerging trends in technology that are worth keeping an eye on in 2023, the use of AI and green technology are definitely two key areas to be aware of. As AI continues to advance and become more integrated into our daily lives, we can expect to see new and exciting developments in a variety of industries. And as the world continues to grapple with the effects of climate change, green technology will play an increasingly important role in helping us find sustainable solutions to our energy needs. While this is not an exhaustive list of all the emerging trends in tech for 2023, it is a good starting point for anyone looking to stay informed about the latest developments in the field.
