Let’s be honest, the market is flooded with candidates searching for their dream job right now and PPC is in high demand! So, I’m here with a few little tips and tricks that could set you out from the rest when it comes to applying for a role in PPC.
So, what is PPC?
Pay Per Click (PPC) is the term used to reference paid advertising, now this could be Facebook ads, Google ads or even Amazon shopping ads! Paying for traffic through bidding on adwords or paid media advertising creates faster results and conversion for businesses opposed to organic marketing, making PPC specialists’ valuable assets to the marketing team.
Why should I look into a career in PPC?
PPC is highly sought after by employers, meaning it’s a guaranteed career path. It’s a fast paced position usually made up of young and dynamic people.
It is results focused meaning you have goals to work towards. You’re the person who see’s the impact of all the hard work put into a campaign and helps the business growth which can be extremely rewarding.
You get to experiment with and analyse data, putting your technical skills to use.
Getting to know your audience can be fun, you get to determine who will see your ads, ensuring they’re placed at the right time and place for your target audience!
Do I need a marketing degree to get into PPC?
No but you do need experience. PPC is all about using your analytical brain to look at performance. Hiring managers look for candidates who display they can think strategically, examine figures and measure statistics on performance on their CV with an element of creativity.
How to get experience?
- There are plenty of courses online created to help you further your knowledge in PPC. Why not start with the Google Adwords certification, created to build and test your knowledge of the basics. Complete this course and show the hiring manager you know your stuff!
- Ask for work experience at inhouse companies or agencies, network on Linkedin, build relationships and reach out to those already in the PPC space to see if they can help you out with an internship! Or utilise your current role by asking to help on the paid ads or shadow the PPC team to see what it’s all about.
- Once you’re certified speak to small or local businesses. Pitch them your plan and create a small scale paid campaign strategy for them, be open helping for free whilst you’re learning the ropes. If you have your own small business, open a business account on Amazon where you can promote and learn AdWords.
- If your current company focus on organic marketing suggest a paid marketing strategy. Put together a tangible plan and pitch it to your employer, remember to include budgets and goals to drive results for your current company. You’ll gain concreate experience and show initiative.
- Do your research! Gain market knowledge, learn the lingo and software’s used within PPC. Show the hiring manager you’re an expert on Excel or Google Sheets, master the features and filters and prove you can manage large amounts of data. Do you know what SA360 is? And how you would use it?
- Keep up to date with industry trends. Ensure you don’t get left behind by knowing what’s the latest developments in the world of Paid Media and what techniques are working well at the moment! Read blogs, follow PPC experts on Linkedin, listen to podcasts to stay in the know.
