What an honour it was to have Music Magpie’s very own Group Marketing Director, Liam Howley, visit the team to talk us about all things eCommerce! From how to secure a job within the industry through to what he looks for in a recruitment company – no stone was left unturned!
Music Magpie’sLiam HowleyLiam discussed the achievements of Music Magpie whilst also providing the team with a history on how Music Magpie originally began as a start-up with a strong family culture and entrepreneurial spirit and now grown into multi-award winning eCommerce empire that has a sister company, Declutter, in the US.
Having been an employee of Music Magpie since the beginning, Liam was able to provide us with a strong insight into the type of people that Music Magpie are always on the hunt for!
Music Magpie’s Top Employee Attributes:
1. Culture is King
It’s important to remember that all companies have their own culture which sets them apart from their competitors so as a result it’s imperative that a business hires someone who fits perfectly with their ethos. Liam described Music Magpie’s CEO, Steve Oliver, has a family man and this heavily impacts on their office environment and as staff spend more time with their colleagues than their own family, it’s vital they get this right.
Steve Oliver2. Hungry for Success
An individual who strives to go above and beyond in order to ensure all targets are met will certainly stand out to their employer, for all the right reasons. Liam also explained that someone’s ambition can trigger creative ideas and openness, both of which are fantastic for any eCommerce business! However, it’s significant to also remember that ambitious and arrogance are two traits that don’t go hand in hand so people should carefully consider this so not to alienate themselves from the workforce.
3. Loyalty is what you do, not what you say
With the number of eCommerce businesses growing each and every day, it can be difficult to find someone who’s loyal to the company and wants to grow as the business does. People who love their work, will go the extra mile to make sure the company succeeds and this is a rare quality to find. Liam said that an individual who has clearly bought into the Music Magpie brand, like himself, tends to have a long and prosperous career with Music Magpie. Equally it should be remembered that loyalty is a two-way street and organisations should have plans in place to ensure that their employees feel valued such as reward systems!
4. Positivity can make all the difference
Let’s be honest, positive behaviour is infectious and can light up the workplace regardless of the situation, therefore it’s a huge quality that business’ look for in an employee. The ability to put a smile on your face and stay optimistic can impact greatly on a person’s efficiency; they are key ingredient for a better team and better office culture!

Laura and Caldon2. The Process
"Another reason that I choose to work with The Candidate is that their team ‘don’t spec’ in candidates to me, they completely understand that when I have a role that I need help with then I’ll be in touch as opposed to sending me candidates which the business doesn’t require at that particular moment."
3. The Sharing of Knowledge
"Due to having that strong relationship with the team, they aren’t afraid to be honest with me in regards and likewise I am with them. We are both able to share insight into our own industries such as realistic salaries or up and coming areas of eCommerce marketing and this makes the recruitment process that much easier"
