Research the Industry

Taking your next steps in Analytics can be a very varied process and look different for everyone. There are so many different skills, specialisms and types of software to focus on – so its really important to do thorough research before you decide which specific discipline within analytics appeals to you.

Do you enjoy working closely with marketeers to optimising campaigns? Thrive on complex data modelling processes? Want to understand consumer psychology?  There are so many possibilities to choose from that can play to your strengths. You could even look at the job description for your dream role, and see the experience needed to find out what to work towards!

Be Specific

As you progress, I would recommend you become an expert in a niche specialism, rather than gaining a top level understanding of many areas, as this will allow you to focus your efforts and ultimately supercharge your career.

Seek Advice and Guidance

Finding a mentor or someone impartial and external to your current organisation can help you progress. You could do this through networking on LinkedIn, or at analytics events in your local area (or virtually!). If you admire someone else’s career path and think that is the area you’d like to focus on, then getting in touch for advice is a great idea. They can share with you any extra steps they took to get where they are now – e.g. courses, qualifications, work experience etc.

Advanced Qualifications and Software

By learning increasingly advance techniques and remaining up to date on the latest and most advanced software, you can progress quickly in the industry.

For example – Google Analytics has their QAIQ Exam (Google Analytics Individual Qualification), which covers an advanced understanding of Google Analytics including Data Collection and Processing, Setting Up Data Collection and Configuration, Advanced Analysis Tools and Techniques, and Advanced Marketing Tools. It’s a fantastic resource if your looking for a starting point to develop your digital analytics repertoire.

Udemy, an online learning and teaching marketplace with over 155000 courses and 35 million students, is also a bountiful resource with a whole host of different courses you can undertake from the comfort of your sofa. They have everything from data programming to marketing analysis.

Embrace the New!

AI and machine learning, XOps, data fabric, NPL, Extended Reality, and DataOps… these are just a few up-and-coming sectors in Data and Analytics that you might want to research and specialise in! By becoming a pro in a newly emerging technology or process, you can beat the crowd and secure a role that’s part of the next big thing.
