Finding Freelance Work with The Candidate - Haylee Campbell, Digital Marketing

Just like Haylee Campbell, a digital marketeer who has been freelancing for the last few years and decided to reach out to our Senior Recruitment Consultant Ceri Whitney.

Hi Haylee! Tell us a bit about yourself!

I’m Haylee, I’m 26 and graduated from a Fashion Design degree in 2019. I’ve had my own business, which led me to pursue a career in creative marketing. It’s been quite a rough ride starting my career throughout covid, and I’ve tried my hand at a lot of different things before beginning to settle on community development and brand relationship management through digital marketing.

How did you find out about The Candidate?

Ceri reached out to me on LinkedIn. I had done some work on making my LinkedIn profile more accessible to recruiters, such as putting ‘open to work’ on and things. I had just been made redundant so having someone approach me was extremely encouraging. 

What was your experience like working with Ceri at The Candidate?

Ceri has gone above and beyond and given me the support I’ve needed after a knock back, to come back more confident in myself and my work. It’s been a seamless experience with a very fast turn around, I also feel that Ceri genuinely cares about placing me with the right client, where a lot of recruiters are doing a bit more of a box ticking exercise.

How did your booking go?

I haven’t started it yet, but my interview was swift and I was offered the role the next day, I think my interests and values are in strong alignment with the company and I’m very excited to see what comes of it.

How are you finding the digital marketing industry at the moment?

Honestly, it's been a bit of a unpredictable time with the cost of living crisis and I’ve felt a bit buffeted about. I think going through the motions of increasingly complex job applications was quite unsavoury for me after being made redundant, so having support and it not being a completely solitary task has made light of a bit of a patchy time.

What advice would you give to people starting out in contracting / freelancing?

To know your worth and don’t settle for something that isn’t good enough for you and to be open minded as you may be surprised at what else comes along. More practically speaking, to build up an emergency fund as soon as you can because contracts can dry up suddenly, put aside cash to pay for time off, and to get an accountant if like me, you’re terrible at maths.
