Dominique Henshaw

When I was approached with the offer for my first recruitment job, I had a few reservations to say the least; recruitment is rarely a career that people set their sights on and recruiters tend to have a bit of a bad reputation on the whole. I didn’t (and still don’t) consider myself a ‘sales’ person and I felt quite intimidated at the prospect of moving into an industry that is stereotyped as being money driven and cut-throat. However, I was ready for a change and the role on offer set to combine two of my key interests (design and people), so I warily agreed to give it a whirl!

Fast-forward 4 years and I’ve had the most fulfilling career experience to date. Recruitment is fast-paced and energetic, you get to meet the most inspiring people, hear the most interesting stories and every day is totally different. As a recruitment consultant, you are constantly learning and developing on a personal level too. I quickly came to learn that recruitment is about people, not sales, and consultants can add huge value when they genuinely care about who they work with and the field they recruit in.

I was fortunate to find an agency that also thought this way and after a successful 4 years working the London creative market, I felt ready to relocate back up north. I was nervous about staying in recruitment as I knew that finding an agency that shared my view would be no easy feat. That was until I stumbled upon The Candidate; immediately, I could sense that they did things differently here and had a people-focused approach. The team was a huge determining factor too; they are ambitious, empathetic and fun-loving and after 2 years working remotely, I really wanted to be back in a thriving team environment.

I’ve joined The Candidate to help expand their Creative offering and after my first month, I’m excited to see what 2018 has in-store. The long and short of it - recruitment is one of the most fun and rewarding jobs you can have, when you have a supportive team and choose to put people first!
