Design trends are always changing. If you check out my blog from last year about creative trends for 2022, we were talking about TikTok, AI, and big data. Many things have changed this year in Design & Creative, but what’s on the horizon for 2023? Let’s take a deep dive…

Because we are very much in the digital age these days, many of the future trends we’ll be predicting will involve web and app design. In the UK this year over 80% of the population made eCommerce purchases, and since the birth of the internet, online shopping has become the norm. Brands will of course put a lot of their advertising spend towards web and social media, so we’re going to be focussing more on digital trends for 2023.

Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to keep and attract audiences to the site, whilst keeping functional and accessible features. Designers will need to collaborate even further with developers to think about web accessibility. Key areas will be:

Already in 2022, many sites have started to move towards more inclusive solutions and creating products that communicate quickly to the brand’s customers.

 

Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, should think of how to attract their customers' attention, especially when it comes to trending or hype products. Lots of brands work with influencers or celebrities who create brilliant visual solutions, but some of these projects don’t have the ‘wow’ factor. Great examples of collaborations that worked well include Fortnite & Balenciaga, Ikea & Lego, and Francis Bourgeois x NorthFace x Gucci. All the successful collaborations have partnerships with brands from very different industries and were completely unexpected, but worked!

You’ve seen 90s Fashion return in a big way and now it’s bleeding into design. Images that are familiar create a feeling of peace and reminiscence, and the retro period has a found new life in design. Some elements of the style are:

This style might not be relevant for every brand (for example luxury and corporate) but can be easily created for fashion, eCommerce, retail, and music.

If 90's Nostalgia isn’t for you, then the distinctive Art Deco vibes might be more suitable.

Classic art deco style is symmetrical, geometrics shapes, and metallic colours like gold & chrome - think the Great Gatsby!  It feels timeless, indulgent and give a strong impression of elegance. The geometric shapes will reduce visual ‘busy-ness’ and create subtle solutions. Look to A.M Cassandre, the legendary art deco artist, for inspiration will doubt get those creative juices flowing.

 

Since 2019, we’ve seen many brands make the shift to minimalist logos and total rebranding to suit this aesthetic. Just look at Google – after the major restructuring in 2015 they updated their icons across all products to create a cohesive look and feel.

Simple design can build strong association to the brand. By selecting just one colour the brand is more likely to become synonymous with it. The design will turn out stylish and have good balance between copy and image.

Just remember with minimalism there might be some complications. Research from Business Insider found that participants liked descriptive logos more and that it gave them a better idea of what the brand stood for. For more established brands, minimalism could be the way forward but start-ups and newer companies might want to adopt descriptive imagery for clarity.

These are just a few ideas that design trends could follow on 2023. Obviously things change incredibly quickly and in a month’s time a something else might come along!
