David Nottage is currently working at Footasylum as their Talent Attraction and Acquisition Manager. With extensive experience in marketing and analytics recruitment, David shares his advice on how to secure a successful analytics career.
David NottageFootasylumHello, and thank you for letting us interview you for our Client Profiles. What is your main job role and responsibility within the business?
I am the Talent Attraction and Acquisition Manager for Footasylum. I head up the attraction of the best talent in the UK for the company and fundamentally my role encompasses Recruitment, Brand and Marketing of Footasylum as an employer.
What advice can you offer to someone who’s looking to start their analytics career?
The first thing I would advise is to have a solid think about what they want to get from their first role. Do they want exposure to new technologies? Do they want to get a better understanding of the business processes? What from your first employer will make you stand out? Do not allow yourself to go into an interview and be influenced by the person interviewing you and not the opportunity for you to develop.
Always consider three elements to any new career move - The Role, The Opportunity and The Environment.
Within Footasylum, we like to consider the role of an analytics employee to be one of three things:
If you like puzzles, like maths, like logic and have the ability to take complex information and deliver it into a palatable format for people who don’t understand, you’ll be perfect for a role in Analytics.
What do you believe are the top five stand out characteristics of an analyst?
Can you please discuss the barriers of recruiting in your industry?
Barriers for Footasylum recruiting in this space only ever circle around the tech stack we use. We have a varied tech stack and as we are a retail brand with multiple areas, we ideally want people with as much of this as possible. We have excellent retention rates in this area and offer our employees the ability to learn and develop new skills.
