As 2019 draws rapidly to an end, Emma Burke, Agency Recruitment Manager takes the opportunity to spend some time reflecting on the Agency scene over the last 12 months.
Emma BurkeWhilst there has been much talk about “in-housing” and some reluctance to spend and invest, which I understand to be more politically driven more than anything, reputable publications estimated a 15% growth for agencies on last year’s digital fee income. Although the growth has hindered slightly since 2017/2018’s 20% growth, the industry is still as buoyant as ever!
With a brand-new decade comes exciting predications around digital and marketing and we’ve seen some exciting new agencies enter the region. Largely, as a result of the quality and number of digital, tech and general marketing professionals. Also, the migration of London-based businesses moving North and wanting to engage with North-West based agencies (Yay!)
Additionally, those agencies who’ve invested in adopting a more “agile” agency models are seeing huge successes. Agencies are still, arguably more so than ever, able to offer their clients value both strategically and commercially and “agency candidates” are, I feel, as multi-disciplined as ever, as they’re needing to stay up to date with the latest trends, technologies and able to offer a higher quality service than before.
The channel specialists in the North West also have a plethora of Agencies to choose from whilst looking for a new role. This can come with huge advantages but also frustrations. For example, whilst a PPC specialist is able to gain a 20%+ pay increase when moving roles, it does put a lot of agencies, who have strict salary bandings, at a huge disadvantage. Whilst speaking to a friend/client who is a departmental lead in PPC, they argued that whilst their clients are the best in the region, their innovation, technology and budgets almost unrivalled, they can’t necessarily meet the salary expectations that some people want to make the move.
It also means that my clients are having to speed up the recruitment process to be able to get talent quicker rather than, in some cases, both parties doing due diligence and finding out whether the business matches their personal goals and aspirations, culture fit and criteria, or whether that person is right for the role that they need.
However, we’re seeing lots of success with the small-mid sized agencies who have scrapped the hierarchical structure inherent in agencies and performing incredible results-driven work for their clients. In addition, the larger network agencies are still able to attract talent due to their prestige, the strength of teams and career progression opportunities available.
Having recruited into agency for… a while, I have been fairly worried about the “state of agency” and how it will impact businesses in the region. However, I’m pleased to report that I have found that there are fewer people wanting to move in-house. Agencies are continuing to grow and adapt, some more organically and strategically, and whilst there is increased competition in the region by some major players, there seem to be enough businesses moving to the NW, or wanting to escape London priced agencies and making the absolute most of the incredible talent that we have up here.
Personally, it’s been a fantastic year and I’m so proud not only of the agencies that we’ve supported but the candidates that have found their dream roles agency side.
