What is the Manufacturing industry?

The manufacturing industry specialises in converting raw materials into finished goods. The process includes design, testing and ensuring that everything runs smoothly. Sectors in manufacturing include, automotive, engineering equipment, aeroplanes, medication and other everyday items. Much activity is B2B, supporting businesses that are then consumer facing, bringing raw materials from across the globe together in the manufacturing process. Back in 2023, there were around 2.7m people employed in the manufacturing industry across the UK. This is unfortunately in decline, having dropped by 1.5m since 1997, with the closing of many manufacturing businesses and the development of software, AI and robotics to replace human work. This has however created a new area for demand, including software development and data-based roles, along with marketing recruitment for the manufacturing industry.
